In New York City, the Education Department is dropping its longtime literacy curriculum as part of a shift to the new Common Core standards. As Robert Pondiscio explains in the NY Daily News, the city will drop the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, a “balanced literacy” curriculum developed by Lucy Calkins.  Lucy Calkins’ approach to literacy was dissected by Barbara Feinberg in the Summer 2007 issue of Ed Next.
