Scrap the Sacrosanct Salary Schedule
Fall 2008 | Education Next

Eric Westervelt of nprED looks into why enrollment in teacher training programs seems to be dropping in many states. Ed school deans interviewed for the story name a lot of things that might be causing the trend — from an improving economy offering potential teachers more options to the feeling of some teachers that they are being treated as scapegoats by politicians and policymakers — but note that there is no good data to confirm these hypotheses.

Is paying teachers more the best way out of this situation, wonders Westervelt?  In “Scrap the Sacrosanct Salary Schedule,” Jacob Vigdor looks at how the current system of teacher pay offers too few rewards for younger teachers.
