The New York Times’ Room for Debate page focuses on teacher quality this week. Among the articles it includes are one by Eric Hanushek which argues that the path to improving teacher quality rests with enhanced evaluation systems for teachers combined with better personnel systems that link hiring, firing, and pay to teacher effectiveness. There are also articles by Amanda Ripley, Jal Mehta, Kaya Henderson, and Mercedes Schneider.

In an Education Next forum on teacher effectiveness, Eric Hanushek and Kati Haycock go into greater detail on strategies for increasing the number of effective teachers in high-need classrooms.
