Was Moynihan Right?
Spring 2015 | Education Next

A new study from the Urban Institute finds that women in their twenties have a lower birth rate today than in any previous generation. For Hispanic and black women, a falling birth rate among unmarried women explains most of the decline. For white women, most of the decline is explained by a decrease in marriage rates.

An article by Sarah McLanahan and Christopher Jencks in the spring 2015 issue of Education Next looks at the impact on children of being raised by a single parent. Other articles in that issue of Education Next closely examine changes in family structure since the Moynihan Report was published 50 years ago and the impact of those changes on the educational and life outcomes of children.
