The Gates Foundation is not only spending $200 million a year on elementary and secondary education projects, it is now working closely with some states on their applications for federal Race to the Top grants, a move that is applauded by some and criticized by others. An article in the winter 2006 issue of Ed Next by Paul Hill reviewed the history of the Gates Foundation’s work in education and its evolving approach to school reform.
