In New York City, the growing list of schools that the district plans to close at the end of this school year includes Jamaica High School in Queens, which was named the best secondary school in America in 1985, but was designated “persistently dangerous” in 2007. An article by Marc Epstein that appeared in Ed Next in 2003 described the challenge and expense of keeping students safe at Jamaica High School.
