Low-income students who attended schools with affluent peers outperformed those who attended schools with higher concentrations of poverty, a new study from Montgomery County, Md. finds. The low-income students in the study came from families who had won spots in housing developments scattered throughout Montgomery County through a lottery. In a forum appearing in the Fall 2010 issue of Ed Next, Steve Rivkin and Susan Eaton discussed the research on the impact of economic and racial segregation on student achievement.
