The American Indian Public Charter High School, which took first place in Jay Mathews’ rating of the U.S.’s most challenging high schools, has been threatened with closure by the Oakland school district because of financial irregularities. American Indian’s middle school was one of six highly effective urban schools profiled by David Whitman in his book Sweating the Small Stuff, which was the basis for an Ed Next article, “An Appeal to Authority.”
