In Montgomery County, Md., the school district is redefining student achievement to include more social and emotional aspects of education, according to an article by Lynh Bui. The district has hired Gallup to survey students on their feelings of hope, engagement, and well-being. Superintendent Joshua Starr says that he views the school district’s work with Gallup as “an opportunity to redefine” school improvement and student success.
In 2009, Ed Next’s Mike Petrilli wrote about Leading for Equity, a book that explored how former Montgomery County’s superintendent Jerry Weast boosted the academic achievement of poor students in the district by focusing relentlessly on academic achievement.
