Teacher Training, Tailor-Made

NPR reports on efforts by the University of Michigan to overhaul its teacher training program so that prospective teachers experience more hands-on training, have more opportunities to observe experienced teachers, and spend less time on book learning. An article by Katherine Newman in the Spring 2009 issue of Ed Next described three other efforts to develop new models of teacher education: a residency program run by the school district in Boston, a fully accredited teacher training program run by a charter school at High Tech High, and a program to train and support small cadres of Catholic school teachers run by Notre Dame.
