High School Graduation Rates Are On The Rise In Most States

Education Next | Fall 2013

Preliminary data released on Monday by the Department of Education show that high school graduation rates rose in a majority of states and gaps in graduation rates between white and minority students narrowed in most states. This will be the third year in a row that graduation rates have risen.

An Education Next article, “Graduations on the Rise,” examines long-term trends in high school graduation rates. The article, by Richard Murnane and Stephen Hoffman, explores how graduation rates increased  between 2000 and 2010 after 30 years of stagnation and examine some possible explanations for the trend.
