Civil Rights Complaint Filed in Texas Truancy Cases

In Dallas, advocacy groups have filed a civil rights complaint against the policy of referring students to truancy court. Truancy courts in Dallas County have prosecuted more than 36,000 students in four school districts. Judge Clay Jenkins of Dallas County told Motoko Rich that the truancy court “offers the best chance for truant students to get back in class and graduate.” June Kronholz wrote about the problem of truancy and about more effective ways of addressing it in the Winter 2011 issue of Ed Next.
