BASIS schools are open-admission charter schools that are among the top-performing schools in the country. Their founders have announced that they will create a separate network of private schools based on the same model. In the Hechinger Report, Richard Whitmire describes the new venture and explains why private school operators should be worried, very worried.

“We have high expectations for what students can learn,” said Mark Reford, the CEO for the private schools. “We want to do what Starbucks did for coffee: raise the demand for a higher level of education.”

June Kronholz explores the success of BASIS charter schools in the Winter 2014 issue of Education Next.
