The state of Massachusetts  is poised to take over the schools in Holyoke, after taking over the schools in Lawrence four years ago. In Commonwealth magazine, Michael Jonas takes a long look at how the state got here and whether it is likely to be effective.

In an article from the Ed Next archive, Andy Smarick argued against the turnaround approach embraced by many districts and states and for an alternative: closing schools down and opening new ones to replace them. Smarick is quoted in the Jonas article on Massachusetts.
