The teachers union in L.A. has ratified a deal that will shorten the school year this year and next as a cost-saving measure. As reported in the L.A. Times, “school district and union leaders had previously said they were against shortening the school year because it would hurt instruction and amount to a pay cut for teachers. But officials decided it was the best option to preserve classroom jobs.” A study published in the Winter 2010 issue of Ed Next found that more instructional days do indeed mean more student learning.
